Meet the charity which provides a life-saving medical courier service to the NHS

There are so many wonderful charities that operate in the South West and we’re constantly in awe at the time and effort volunteers dedicate to ensure these charities continue to deliver their admirable work. That is why DCW supports a number of charities and is pleased to give back to our local community.

One of those charities is Devon Freewheelers which we have been supporting for 10 years. Also known as The Devon Blood Bikes, the charity offers a free medical courier service to the NHS. Volunteers transport blood, samples, donor milk, patient medication and more to and from hospitals, GP surgeries, dialysis units and patients’ homes. They also resupply the Devon Air Ambulance helicopters and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance with vital blood and blood products.

All volunteers hold an advanced riding qualification and don’t just serve Devon. Sometimes, they go further afield, organising relays with other blood bike groups to serve other areas. Volunteers do not get paid and work outside of normal working hours including weekends, throughout the night and Bank Holidays.

DCW supports Devon Freewheelers by providing the charity with a waste management service free of charge. This ensures that any medical and hazardous waste the charity produces is disposed of in a safe manner which complies with current regulations.

Russell Roe, Devon Freewheelers CEO, commented: “We are extremely grateful to DCW for all their support over the last 10 years. It is continued support by local companies that helps us to continue offering the free out of hours service to the NHS, GP surgeries and patients in the community.”
