New Opt-in Recycling Scheme Launched for 2020

Since we were established in 1989, we’ve been a trailblazer for recycling in the South West. As an independent local operator based in Devon, we were the first company in the South West to offer a Zero to Landfill solution, meaning that all materials that can be recycled, are. Other companies have since copied us, but we remain the only Zero to Landfill company in the South West to process general waste, rather than sending all resources to waste-to-energy.

Building on our Zero to Landfill credentials, we want to do even more to improve our rates of recycling in the South West, by improving the quality of the waste we process.

Introducing our new opt-in Circular Economy Scheme

The DCW Circular Economy Scheme has been introduced to improve the quality of recycling, eliminate waste and promote the continual use of resources, by separating waste at source. This in turn will create a more effective economy and reduce the environmental impact of our production and consumption in both the UK and abroad.

At DCW, we are still the only waste management company in the South West that extracts recycling from mixed commercial waste as well as the mixed recycling bins – all other waste companies send their general waste direct to landfill or to waste to energy. On average, our approach achieves an overall recycling rate of 44%. However, at DCW we want to take it a step further with the help of our clients.

Our Vision

DCW has a vision to create a sustainable circular economy for commercial recycling in the South West. To achieve this we need your help to improve the quality of our recycling and help the environment.

Why are these new measures necessary?

The recycling industry has never seen such dramatic change in recycling markets and public awareness, especially around plastics. We have a responsibility to act and at DCW, we are investing millions here in the South West to ensure recycling produced in the area stays in the area.

You may have read in the news recently that there have been increasing restrictions on the exportation of waste overseas, including a crisis situation for EU paper recyclers after China closed its doors to waste imports. Shipping waste around the world was always unsustainable, which is why DCW is processing its waste here in the UK.

The whole collection process is changing to meet the quality standards now required with recycling, to ensure it can be processed here in the UK – creating jobs and reducing CO2.

How you can help

By separating your recycling at source into separate sacks (one for tin/cans, one for plastic bottles and one for paper and cardboard stacked separately), we can increase the recycling rate up to 94% – that’s a 50% increase on recycling that we’ll achieve through the DCW Circular Economy Scheme.

What does the DCW Circular Economy Scheme mean for my business?

From 1st January 2020, we are inviting our customers to opt-in to our new DCW Circular Economy Scheme.

All DCW customers can register on a voluntary basis to participate in the new Scheme, whereby they sort their waste into separate bags for tin/cans, plastic bottles and poly, and paper (magazines and newspapers etc) to help improve how much of their waste can be recycled. Clients with larger volumes of clean poly/shrink wrap or cardboard can deposit it in the bin as it is. DCW will collect the waste from the bins provided in the usual way.

How do I sign up?

DCW is the first company to introduce these new measures in the South West. We hope that you’ll support us in improving recycling rates, thereby making a sustainable change that will have a positive impact on our environment.

Registering for the initiative is simple and the only ongoing cost implication is the plastic bags for sorting the waste, which are recyclable and available for purchase at cost price – £5 for a roll of 50 bags (10p each). For customers with cardboard waste, rolls of tape are also available for purchase from DCW to bind the card, avoiding the cost of an additional bin.

Once registered, you will receive a pack including a wall poster guide to sorting your waste and you’ll get your first roll of plastic waste bags for free. You’ll also receive a window sticker and logo for your premises and website to show your commitment to becoming a greener business through the DCW Circular Economy Scheme.

To find out more about the DCW Circular Economy Scheme or to opt-in, simply call the DCW team on 01392 537126 or email sales@dcw.co.uk.

"We as a company changed our waste suppliers to DCW earlier this season, quite an undertaking as it involved three of our local parks.

"The transition from one company to DCW was made seamless by Kate. Nothing was too much trouble and when questions were raised, she either answered straight away or found out and came back to us. Kate is always contactable, important for a business like ours when so much is done online. She regularly keeps in contact and will call in as and if required."

"Like all companies, this period has been difficult for Twofour Group Ltd. However, we are successfully attempting to return to some form of normal working practices and with the assistance of efficient and adaptable contractors, this goal is hopefully easier to achieve. DCW are without doubt the best waste contractor that we have dealt with, in my 13 years at this company... I would have no hesitation in recommending DCW with their 'Zero to landfill' ethos being an important virtue with our company."

"We've been DCW customers for about 3 years, maybe longer. Their zero to landfill promise aligns with our ideals, and makes our tenants very happy. They don't need to sort their waste to know that if it's recyclable, it gets recycled. Zero hassle, zero to landfill. Accounts and customer services staff have always been very helpful and friendly.

If you haven't tried them, what have you got to lose?"

"As a business we strive to maximise waste for recycling, however as a busy exhibition and conference centre found it difficult with traders not necessarily caring of the way in which they dispose of waste. In working with DCW, we have been able to achieve our ambitions and easily, thanks to the fantastic technology they use. We are now proudly recycling the vast majority of waste generated."

“After experiencing a series of inconsistent collections and communication difficulties with our previous waste management provider, we switched to DCW who now handle our general waste and recycling requirements for our two sites in Somerset. We are extremely happy with the excellent service we receive from DCW. The transfer process was easy and simple and it’s handy to have a monthly call with the team. Even though DCW offers competitive rates, we primarily switched to this local recycling company for a better service as our previous provider was unreliable. I cannot fault the DCW team’s work and I look forward to working with them in the foreseeable future.”

Always there at the end of the phone when the latest Covid guidance for schools changes and we have to adapt our processes. It’s nice to not have to worry about the waste chain when there is so much else to consider at the moment."
