Child Hope Ministries

At Devon Contract Waste we’re passionate about caring for not just the wonderful environment on our doorstep by reducing landfill, but also supporting people and places in need further afield. One such example is our work with Child Hope Ministries. You can also read about our support for projects in Mali and Kibera.

About the project
10628749_435184743317412_2574398221904931269_oChild Hope Ministries is a not-for-profit community-based organisation that was formed by local people with a vision to support, unite and promote community development in vulnerable communities in Jinja, Uganda, and neighbouring districts. Its goal is to promote community empowerment through building local infrastructure to handle HIV/AIDS prevention programmes, support and care services, create self help and income generating activities and, of course, education for marginalised children.

The organisation was established in 2009, initially to provide an orphanage with accommodation, food and clothing for children who had lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. As time went on it expanded by taking care of other children suffering from poverty in the surrounding community. Child Hope Ministries does not limit itself to children in the orphanage but also provides support to children living with elderly relatives or sick parents.

How we are helping
In 2014 the charity built a classroom in the grounds with funds donated by Devon Contract Waste and now employs a teacher, which has greatly increased its ability to educate more children.
In 2016, Devon Contract Waste donated a further £1,000 to purchase a roof for an expanded children’s home on the site.

To give real security to the home we also pay all the rent to the landlord each month to enable the charity’s own limited funds to stretch further.

The ultimate ambition is to purchase the site from the owner but the most important thing is to help as many children as we can today.
